Adam Smasher: The Cyborg Who Became Arasaka’s Most Loyal Soldier

Adam Smasher is a name that strikes fear in the hearts of many in Night City. He is a full-borg solo, a mercenary who replaced his entire body with cybernetics, leaving behind only his brain and a shred of his humanity. He is also the personal bodyguard of Yorinobu Arasaka, the leader of the Steel Dragons and the heir of the Arasaka Corporation. But how did Adam Smasher become the ruthless killing machine that he is today? And what are his motivations and goals? In this article, we will explore the history and personality of Adam Smasher, as well as his role in Cyberpunk 2077.

From Punk to Soldier

Adam Smasher was born in New York City, where he grew up as a typical punk, a street thug who joined a gang and lived a life of crime and violence. When his gang was wiped out by rival factions, he had no choice but to join the Army, hoping to find a new purpose and direction. However, his lack of discipline and morals soon got him discharged for bad conduct. He returned to New York and became a contract gun-boy, a hired killer who took on any job as long as it paid well and involved collateral damage and civilian casualties.

The Rocket Incident

Adam Smasher’s career as a gun-boy was successful for a while, until he took on a job that proved to be too much for him. He was ambushed by enemies who fired rockets at him, turning him into a bloody mess. His buddies managed to carry him out of the zone and back to the city, where he was approached by a mysterious corporate benefactor. The benefactor offered him a choice: either die or become a full-body cyborg and serve the corporation. Adam Smasher had no hesitation in accepting the offer, as he had no attachment to his human side and only cared about survival and power.

The Arasaka Connection

The corporation that saved Adam Smasher’s life was none other than Arasaka, one of the most powerful and influential megacorporations in the world. Arasaka saw potential in Adam Smasher as a loyal and efficient operative who could carry out their dirty work without remorse or hesitation. They rebuilt him as a towering cyborg with advanced weapons and armor, making him one of the deadliest solos in the world. Adam Smasher felt grateful to Arasaka for giving him a second chance at life, and swore allegiance to them. He became their head of security and the personal bodyguard of Yorinobu Arasaka, the son of Saburo Arasaka, the founder and CEO of the corporation.

The Rivalry with Morgan Blackhand

During his time as an Arasaka operative, Adam Smasher developed a rivalry with Morgan Blackhand, another legendary solo who worked for Militech, Arasaka’s main competitor. Morgan Blackhand was considered to be one of the best solos in history, a master of combat and tactics who valued professionalism and honor. Adam Smasher saw him as a threat to his metal-is-better-than-meat worldview, and sought to prove himself superior to him. The two solos clashed several times over the years, but their most famous encounter was during the Fourth Corporate War, when they fought each other on top of Arasaka Tower during the Night City Holocaust.

The Role in Cyberpunk 2077

Adam Smasher’s fate after the Fourth Corporate War is unknown, but he reappears in Cyberpunk 2077 as one of the main antagonists. He is still loyal to Arasaka and Yorinobu Arasaka, who has taken over the corporation after his father’s death. He is also involved in some of the major events of the game’s plot, such as the theft of the Relic, a biochip that contains the digital engram of Johnny Silverhand, a famous rockerboy and rebel leader who was killed by Adam Smasher during the Night City Holocaust. Adam Smasher will pose a formidable challenge to V, the protagonist of Cyberpunk 2077, who will have to face him in several occasions throughout their journey.

Adam Smasher is a fascinating character who represents one of the extremes of cyberpunk: a person who has sacrificed his humanity for power and loyalty to a corporation. He is also a formidable foe who will test V’s skills and resolve in Cyberpunk 2077.
