Mark Zuckerberg is a technology pioneer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist best known as the co–founder, chairman, and CEO of the world’s largest social media platform, Facebook. He was born on May 14, 1984, in White Plains, New York, and raised in Dobbs Ferry, New York. From an early age, Zuckerberg was interested in computers and programming, and even created a messaging program for his father‘s dental office. Throughout high school, Zuckerberg continued to hone his programming skills and was even offered a job by AOL and Microsoft while still in high school. In 2002, he enrolled at Harvard University, where he wrote a program called Facemash that allowed students to compare two photos side by side and vote on which one was more attractive. That program caught the attention of other Harvard students, and this ultimately led to the launch of Facebook in 2004. Today, Facebook is the world’s largest social network with over 2.7 billion users worldwide. In addition to his success at Facebook, Zuckerberg has also been at the helm of other projects, including the launch of the philanthropic organization, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, with his wife Priscilla Chan. Through this organization, he has committed to giving away 99% of his Facebook shares over the course of his lifetime. Aside from his entrepreneurial endeavors, Zuckerberg is also an active philanthropist, having donated $100 million to Newark public schools in 2010, as well as $1 billion to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in 2013. He has also served on the boards of several organizations, including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, FWD.us, and the Breakthrough Energy Coalition.
